Hole Drilling

drilling glass
Are you involved in a project that requires having holes drilled in the glass? Perhaps a hole in a glass patio table top for your umbrella? If so, you have come to the right place.

Drilling glass is something we do daily. We can drill holes of multiple diameters for tempered, PyroCeram®, or NeoCeram® glass. We use a water jet for majority of holes which allows many diameters including, but not limited to: 1/8″, 3/16″, 1/4″, 5/16″, 3/8″, 7/16″, 1/2″, 9/16″, 5/8″, 11/16″, 3/4″, 13/16″, 7/8″, 15/16″, 1″, 1 1/4″, 1 1/2″, 1 3/4″, 2″, 2 1/4″, 2 1/2″, 2 3/4″, and 3″.

We can also cut perfectly circular glass pieces for whatever you need.

Share the dimensions and specifications of the shape you desire cut – if circular, include the radius or diameter – and attach directly to our order form as a CAD file, or a picture of a hand drawing. If difficult to describe, you can also send a preliminary drawing to support@onedayglass.com or by fax to (360) 892-8152 for approval. If you are unable to provide us with a digital file, the next option is to send a paper template. Prepare a tracing of the pattern you want as well as your name plus contact info and send to the following address:

There may be extra charges for holes or circular cuts. Get in touch with us to explain your particular needs.

Since our glass tints are through the entire thickness of the glass, it is more durable and will not rub off like tinted films will. Glass tints of the same color will appear darker with thicker glass. Look at the color charts by thickness to see how the tint will affect darkness.

At One Day Glass we carry glass in several different tints, which vary according to thickness. And we can cut tinted glass within an industry-leading 1/16th-of-an-inch cutting tolerance, which means we can match your exact specifications. Check out our tint samples and see if tinted glass might be a good fit for your next project.

Hole Drilling FAQS

Drilling a hole in a glass is quite simple. What you need is to use a carbide bit which is designed especially for glass and tile. You can find it at most home centers alongside other drill bits or ceramic tile tools. Since glass is smooth and hard, the bit wanders as you start drilling. Make sure to tape a small scrap of dense cardboard to the glass. When drilling a hole, start with a very low rpm to create a dimple in the glass. Once done, remove the cardboard and continue at about 400 rpm. Keep the glass firmly supported on the backside and ensure you only place very light pressure on the drill. This is because pressing too hard can crack the glass.

It is not recommended to drill through the tempered glass because it will completely shatter. Suppose you need a tempered glass with a hole in it; the spot or any other shaping must be done before the tempering process.

Tempered glass is up to five times stronger compared to regular plate glass. The best thing about it is it can withstand surface compression of more than 10,000 psi. Not only that, but it is also highly resistant to thermal breakage. However, it can still shatter. When it breaks, it shatters into small pebbles.
